Gambling: Playing Without Comprehension

Do not play in a game that you do not truly understand or one where the rules are strange to you, or where they are too complicated for your immediate comprehension.

This may sound like elementary stuff, but there are untold craps players who did not even know they could take single or double odds on their line bets and did not know how to make a come bet, yet there they were, emptying their wallets of cash to get some action going.

In blackjack, the situation is worse, because it is a game that can be beaten. At the worst, you can play even with the house, and with correct basic strategy and counting cards, you have a decided advantage over the casino. Yet, blackjack continues to function in the casinos as lucrative game for the house.

Why is that?

How can that be when the game can be beaten? That is because most people playing do not even know the correct basic strategy. And of those who do, many of them have not learned self-discipline and handling their finances; and many others in whatever game they play, do not really want to win. They just want action and get bored easily with steady wins.

Be cautious. Do not play any casino game that you have no thorough knowledge of, and that you do not have a sound basic strategy for.

As to a game like poker, you must be more skilled; otherwise there is no hope of winning over the long run. This is a tough world, as you must know by now, and the world of laying a bet is harder than any other world. There is no mercy about it. If you are not superior than your opponents, most definitely, they will quickly dispose of you.

It is not enough in poker to know the straightforward rules and some approach. You must know further. You must try and learn more of the rules associated with it as well. To win, you have to know as much about the game as you can, and you have to play at a betting level where your knowledge is advanced to the other players. It is a simple as that, and yet that simple basic premise is not followed by the vast majority of poker players.

That is why there are scores of losers than winners. And, as Barnum said, "there's a sucker born every minute." But not a lot can identify the end of that sage statement "… and two to take him." Do not be taken. Know what you are doing.
